Mission

Our Mission is to provide relevant and challenging instruction. We will set high expectations for students, focusing on experiences that build positive relationships, collaboration, and persistence, and that encourage maximum student effort.

History

Evanston Middle School used to be Evanston High School until the new school High School was finished for the 1985-86 school year. After the high school students moved, the old building became Evanston Middle School. In 2013 plans moved forward to remodel the existing building and students were able to move in to the new building during the 2015-16 school year.

General Information

    Principal's Message

    My name is Pat Fackrell, I grew up right here in Evanston. I graduated from Evanston High School. I feel very fortunate growing up in Evanston. I was able to spend most of my days outdoors with family and friends. I competed in multiple sports in middle school and high school. School was very important to me and was key to my choosing education as a profession. I met my wife Bev here in Evanston and we have two children who attended UCSD#1 schools.

    After graduating from high school I attended Chadron State College in Chadron Nebraska.  I was a member of the football team and graduated in physical education and health. After graduation, I received an offer to become a graduate assistant position with the football team at CSC.  We moved to Spearfish South Dakota and taught/coached at Black Hills State University.  We moved back to Evanston in 2009 where I taught at Evanston High School in the physical education department.  In 2022 I became the Dean of Students at Evanston Middle School and Davis Middle School.

    I am very excited to have the opportunity to be the Principal here at Evanston Middle School.  EMS is a great place and we have wonderful teachers in our building.  We have a great group of professionals that keep our building looking great.   Most importantly we have awesome students.  Together we can meet the demands of 21st-century citizenship, career, and post-secondary education. EMS not only stands for Evanston Middle School, but it also stands for Effort Makes Success.

    School Profile

    General School Description

    Evanston Middle School is one of two middle schools in rural Evanston, Wyoming. Evanston is located in the Southwest corner of Wyoming, just five miles from the Utah border. Evanston has a population of approximately 12,000 people, with our middle school population in grades 6-8 being around 315 students.

    Evanston Middle School also serves students from the outlying rural communities of Bear River, Almy, and Hilliard. About 45%of Evanston Middle School students receive free and reduced meal benefits. The student population is primarily Caucasian, followed in number by Hispanic students, and a very few number of students in other demographics. Our staff is composed of 35 certified professionals, 7 paraprofessionals who assist teachers in the classroom and 14 auxiliary support staff who keep operations flowing seamlessly.

    All students at Evanston Middle School are provided yearlong instruction in the five core areas of mathematics, English, science, social studies, and physical education. The sequencing of courses and their general content is determined by school district curriculum guidelines. All students choose a music class and are able to participate in the choir, band, or strings. Students are also provided quarterly instruction at each grade level in related arts classes such as art, photography, robotics, technology, parenting, Spanish, and other life skills.

    Students have a variety of activities in which they can participate. Our seventh and eighth-grade students may participate in all sports activities offered, while our sixth graders only participate in swimming, wrestling, and track. Other special programs offered include Mathcounts, Writer’s Ink, Speech & Debate, Academic Bowl, Robotics, and Study Tables.

    We at Evanston Middle School feel it a privilege to be a part of your student's lives on a daily basis. We are continually amazed by their talents, energy, and determination. We look forward to watching them grow, fulfill their greatest potential and become the leaders of tomorrow. Go Wolverines!!!

    Comprehensive Plan

    Wyoming School Comprehensive Plan

    The Wyoming Department of Education, in cooperation with AdvancED®, has developed a comprehensive school plan that meets multiple Wyoming, federal, and accreditation requirements. This plan is required of all schools by November 1 annually.

    AdvancED Standards for Quality

    There is no one type of school. Nor is there just one approach to teaching and learning. Yet regardless of a school’s size, location, philosophy or education model, it benefits from intensive, ongoing diagnostic reviews of its work, carried out by knowledgeable, well-trained, independent reviewers.

    That’s why the AdvancED Standards for Quality require each school to be reviewed in a way that is appropriate to its mission and purpose.

    These Standards are research-based, comprehensive quality statements that describe conditions and factors that contribute to a quality educational experience and operational effectiveness. Our research confirms our beliefs that every school requires:

    • stable governance, management, and leadership;
    • a coherent course of study;
    • a reliable system by which to assess students’ progress;
    • instructors who have a clear understanding of what they aim to teach, how, and why; and
    • access to the resources they need.

    We recognize that these basic criteria can be met in any number of ways and that effective instruction looks very different school to school. No matter your method, style or philosophy, the AdvancED Standards for Quality provide direction for every institution.

    Academic Success Center

    In order to help our students achieve their full potential, Evanston Middle School offers a lunchtime Academic Success Center. This center allows students to work or study in a quiet, calm environment while eating lunch. Students may be referred by a teacher, or by themselves to the Academic Success Center.

    EMS Discipline Policy

    Evanston Middle School teachers and staff believe that we should help each student reach his or her potential and become a contributing member of society. We further believe that a safe educational environment should be provided for all students; an environment that will foster the motivation necessary for positive physical, mental, social and character growth and improvement.

    In order to assist students in the pursuit of a quality education, we have established some general rules for student behavior. We operate under the guiding principle that all students are responsible for their choices, actions and behavior. If a student's choices, actions, or behavior violate any of our established school rules, the student must accept the consequences.

    Nurse's Corner

    The nurse’s room is located in the main office. My goal is to provide a continuum of services for all students, including those with special needs and to ensure a safe, positive, appropriate learning environment for all students.

    If you feel we need to be aware of some health concerns your child may have such as hearing or vision problems, starting some new medication, or any other health concerns which may impact your child while here at school, please notify me at 789-5499.

    If your child is sick, or seriously injured, I or a staff member will assist them in calling parents/guardians or emergency contact people listed on their school records to be taken home or to the hospital if necessary.

    In addition, when your child is sick, we will need you to make transportation arrangements. Please make sure we have the most up to date phone numbers such as your work, home, cell phone and most importantly, emergency contact references for your child. If the parents/guardians cannot be reached and it is an emergency, 911 will be called.

    If medicine must be taken during school, I or a trained staff member designated by the Principal, will administer the medication. All medications will be stored in the nurse's locked medicine cabinet unless specified otherwise by written "Doctor's Orders" (see Medication Policy).

    Written "Doctor’s Orders" are required for all prescription medication in addition to a signed “Parent Permission” form.

    "Parent Permission" forms are required as well for all over-the-counter medications and are available in the school office.

    All medications must be in either the prescription bottle or the original container and be age appropriate for your child and not be expired.

    Routine screening for height/weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis will be provided to students as scheduled.
